foldin' flats

Most flats'll be completely saturated through your child's wet zone as soon as they pee.  If you like to let your baby go coverless, stack two flats and use them as one (this is the easiest for ECers ), fold up a second flat to use as a doubler, or use whatever prefolds, wipes, washcloths, or doublers you may already have on hand.   Also, remember that fabrics vary widely.  Gauze, birdseye, flannel, and the like won't be as thirsty as woven cotton terry, hemp jersey, and other heavier fabrics; the same type of fabric may have varying weights; and even the same type and weight fabric can still vary widely in absorbency due to differences in the quality of the raw fiber, finishing techniques/additives, etc.

prefold folds:  The quick and easy square prefold (which is square and has 4 layers throughout) is ideal for folks who feel overwhelmed with the idea of folding.  This fold works for all babies.  The basic overlapped prefold (which is rectangular and has extra layers in the middle just like a prefold) is best for small babies and thin babies.  Approximate after-foldin' measurements for 27, 30, 32, 34 and 36" squares.  How to fold for preemies and toddlers, and how to tweak for a trimmer fit and longer or shorter rise.  After you get either of these flat prefolds done, you'll want to see the folds for prefolds below.  Updated 9/16~ no photos for the quick and easy square prefold yet.
